Hard Water in Champaign County: What It Is Doing to Your House

The spots on the glasses are the least of it. What dissolved minerals do to water heaters, fixtures, and appliances over time, and how to decide whether softening is worth it.

If you have lived in Central Illinois for any length of time you have made peace with certain things: the film on the shower door, the white crust at the faucet aerator, the fact that soap never quite rinses off. That is hard water, and it is a groundwater fact of life across much of this region.

Most of the annoyance is cosmetic. Some of it is not.

What hardness actually is

Hard water is water carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium, picked up as groundwater moves through limestone and dolomite. It is measured in grains per gallon (gpg) or parts per million.

  • 0–3 gpg — soft. You would notice.
  • 3–7 gpg — moderately hard.
  • 7–10 gpg — hard. Scale becomes visible on fixtures.
  • 10+ gpg — very hard. This is where most well water in the region lands, and a fair amount of municipal supply too.

None of it is a health concern. Calcium and magnesium in drinking water are benign. This is a plumbing and appliance problem, not a safety problem.

Where it costs you money

The water heater

This is the big one. When hard water is heated, the dissolved minerals precipitate out and settle — as a layer of scale on the bottom of a tank heater, or on the heat exchanger of a tankless unit.

In a tank, that sediment layer sits between the burner and the water. The burner has to fire longer to push heat through it, which means higher gas use and a hotter, more stressed tank bottom. It is a meaningful contributor to why some water heaters fail years before their rated life.

Fixtures and valves

Scale builds inside cartridges, aerators, and shower heads. Symptoms show up as reduced flow, a faucet that drips no matter how many times the cartridge is replaced, and shower heads that spray sideways.

Appliances

Dishwashers and washing machines both heat water and both scale. Manufacturers of both routinely list hard water as a life-shortening condition.

Soap, and the amount of it

Hardness minerals bind with soap instead of letting it lather, which is why hard-water households habitually use more detergent, more shampoo, and more dish soap than they need to. The residue is the gray film on the tub.

Softening versus filtering — they are different jobs

This distinction trips people up constantly.

  • A water softener removes hardness minerals through ion exchange, trading calcium and magnesium for sodium or potassium. It solves scale, soap, and appliance life. It does not improve taste, remove chlorine, or address contaminants.
  • A filtration system targets taste, odor, chlorine, sediment, iron, or specific contaminants. It does not remove hardness.

Plenty of houses want both, and they are commonly installed together with the softener first in line.

Before buying anything, get the water tested. Municipal supply, private well, and neighborhoods on different sources within the same town can differ substantially. Sizing a softener without a hardness number is guessing.

Is it worth it?

The honest calculation weighs the equipment and salt against the life you get back from a water heater, a dishwasher, and a washing machine, plus the fixtures you stop replacing and the detergent you stop overusing.

In a house at 10+ gpg with a family running daily laundry and dishes, softening generally pays. In a two-person household at 6 gpg, it is more of a comfort decision than an economic one — and that is a legitimate reason to do it, as long as you know which one you are making.
